FACS 113 Intro to Design
Interior Design Program Banner Winners
For the first group project, we designed 2 vertical banners to promote the Interior Design program. Our banner won the design competition and was displayed outside of the new Interior Design lab!
The coastal interior design style displays various light to medium wood tones and blue hues; it inspired me to use different tints and shades of blue-green, blue, and blue-violet to achieve the analogous color scheme. I chose a light birch hardwood for the flooring. The sun hat, sunglasses, sandals, and basket-weave textured bag allude to a summer beach setting.
To achieve the monochromatic color scheme, I used different tints and shades of sage green. I also chose a mix of light to medium-range hardwood planks for the flooring. The plants and accessories allude to a warm and cozy setting.
For both rooms, I created the look of dimension with shadows, highlights, and sunlight. I also used a luminance brush tool to create lightbulbs under the lampshades. I poché’d the walls black and the windows a light gray to represent the glazing.
Scale and Proportion
Using colored pencils, I rendered the fabric sample pattern to fit the chair template. The chair on the left is 3/4" scale, and the one on the right is 1 -1/2" scale.
Color Value
For this project I created a geometric example showing shades and tints of the same color. I chose a sheep to represent Jesus as the “Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world” (John 1:29). Psalm 23 also shows that The Lord is our Shepherd and with Him we lack nothing. This is why I incorporated primary red and 3 other shades of red into the grayscale coat. This visually illustrates the blood that He shed for us.
Smoke Effect
For extra Photoshop practice, I used clipping masks, color grading, and smoke brushes to stylize my golden retriever (Manny) with a smoke effect.
Abstract Expressionist
Portrait
For extra Photoshop practice, I used clipping masks, color grading, and imported graphics to stylize Manny into an abstract expressionist portrait.
Self-Portrait
In my self-portrait, I wove together my face in black and white with various people in color. Each person is someone I am close with, so their strips have unique features that remind me of their impact in my life.
Alphabet Photography
For the theme, I focused on three materials (bricks, metals, and textiles) to showcase each alphabet letter. Choosing materials is a crucial task in interior design. Closely examining these materials shows how much humans are involved in the design world.
Implied Line Chair
I used hash lines and dots of 3 different thicknesses to represent the shadows and highlights of this chair without giving it a hard outline.
